The funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, was held on September 6th 1997. The coffin was drawn on a gun carriage from Kensington Palace to Westminster Abbey through streets estimated to hold a million people, in a silence broken only by hooves and a bell tolling every minute. Elton John sang a rewritten Candle in the Wind, which became the best-selling single in British chart history. When Earl Spencer finished speaking, applause from the crowds outside rolled in through the Abbey doors and was taken up within.

The Mayflower sailed from Plymouth on September 6th 1620, by the calendar then in use in England, which puts it on the 16th by ours. She carried 102 passengers and took sixty-six days.

On September 6th 1522 the Victoria came into harbour in Spain with eighteen men aboard, the last of some 260 who had set out three years earlier under Magellan. He was not among them; Juan Sebastián Elcano brought her home.

Roger Waters, the songwriter and bass player who co-founded Pink Floyd, never knew his father, a conscientious objector who changed his mind, joined up and was killed at Anzio in 1944; much of what the band made in the seventies circles back to it. Waters was born on September 6th 1943 and the actor Idris Elba, in Hackney, in 1972.
