How we source these
Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.
September 7th through history
The first night of the Blitz
On the afternoon of September 7th 1940 about 350 German bombers came up the Thames with fighter escort and attacked the London docks. The East End burned so brightly that the glow was visible thirty miles away, and the second wave that night navigated by the light of the first. Several hundred civilians were killed. It was the opening of fifty-seven consecutive nights of bombing, and the beginning of the phase of the war that most British families remember through their grandparents rather than through books.
Elizabeth I, the queen whose long reign gave its name to the Elizabethan age, was born at Greenwich Palace on September 7th 1533, to the plain disappointment of a father who had reordered the church of an entire country in order to have a son. She reigned for forty-four years.
The last known thylacine died at a zoo in Hobart on September 7th 1936, two months after the species was finally granted legal protection. Australia now marks the date as National Threatened Species Day.
Buddy Holly, one of the pioneers of rock and roll, was dead at twenty-two, after about eighteen months of hit records, and left behind enough songs to keep two generations of British guitar bands in material. He was born on September 7th 1936, the singer Gloria Gaynor, later known for I Will Survive, in 1943, and Chrissie Hynde, frontwoman of the Pretenders, in 1951.
Born on 7 September: star sign, birthstone and birth flower
Elizabeth I, Buddy Holly, Gloria Gaynor and Chrissie Hynde โ named above โ all share a 7 September birthday, and all four were born under the same star sign.
Star sign
Virgo (23 August – 22 September) — an Earth sign ruled by Mercury, symbolised by the Maiden.
Birthstone
Sapphire — both the traditional and modern September birthstone, so there is no split to navigate.
Birth flower
Aster (primary), also morning glory — most commonly cited sources agree on aster as the main September flower.
None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
