A coronation, a broadcast and a borrowed stone
On Christmas Day 1066 William of Normandy was crowned in Westminster Abbey. The congregation roared its assent in English and in French, the Norman guards outside took the noise for a rising and set fire to the houses around, and the abbey emptied as the smoke came in. Orderic Vitalis says the service was finished by the new king and a handful of clergy, all of them shaking.
On Christmas Day 1932 George V spoke to the Empire from a small room under the stairs at Sandringham, reading a script by Rudyard Kipling: he spoke, he said, from his home and from his heart, to all of them. Some twenty million people heard it. He had resisted the wireless for years as undignified, and a sovereign has spoken almost every Christmas since.
On Christmas Day 1950 four Glasgow University students took the Stone of Scone from Westminster Abbey. It broke in two on the way out, went north in a car boot, and appeared on the high altar at Arbroath Abbey the following April. Nobody was prosecuted. The stone went home to Scotland for good in 1996.
