Neptune was found on the night of September 23rd 1846 by Johann Galle at the Berlin Observatory, within an hour of starting to look and less than a degree from the position Urbain Le Verrier had calculated on paper. In Cambridge, John Couch Adams had arrived at much the same answer a year earlier, and the Astronomer Royal, George Airy, had not thought it worth a serious search. Britain lost a planet by a matter of weeks, and Airy spent the rest of his career explaining himself.
On September 23rd 1779, off Flamborough Head, John Paul Jones fought HMS Serapis by moonlight while crowds watched from the Yorkshire cliffs. Called on to surrender, he is reported to have replied that he had not yet begun to fight. The Serapis struck; Jones’s own ship sank two days afterwards.
