Two Britons on Everest, and a night in the open
At six in the evening on September 24th 1975 Doug Scott and Dougal Haston reached the top of Everest by the south-west face, a wall that four expeditions had failed on and which Chris Bonington had spent years planning to climb. They were the first Britons to stand on the summit. It was far too late to get down, so they dug a hole in the snow below the South Summit at around 8,750 metres and sat out the night with no oxygen and no sleeping bags. Both came down in the morning with their fingers and toes intact, which mountaineers still regard as the improbable part.
On September 24th 1852 Henri Giffard flew a steam-powered airship seventeen miles from Paris to Trappes, the first powered and steerable flight of any kind. His engine could manage about six miles an hour, so any real wind simply took him where it liked.
