On October 4th 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, a polished aluminium sphere 58 centimetres across with four trailing aerials, into an orbit it completed every ninety-six minutes. It carried nothing but a radio transmitter, and its beeping was picked up by amateurs with shortwave sets all over Britain. It burned up the following January. Washington’s response ran from a new civilian space agency to an Act of Congress pushing science teaching into American schools.

Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists intended to march through the East End of London on October 4th 1936, and the East End declined to allow it. Several thousand marchers and a much larger crowd of dockers, Jewish families, Irish labourers and trade unionists met around Cable Street. Barricades went up, the march was abandoned, and the day is commemorated on a mural in Shadwell.

The Orient Express made its first run out of Paris on October 4th 1883, though for another six years passengers were obliged to complete the journey to Constantinople by ferry, a second train and a steamer down the Black Sea.

Buster Keaton, the deadpan silent-film comedian and stunt daredevil behind The General, was born into a vaudeville family on October 4th 1895. Terence Conran, the designer and retailer who did more than anyone to change the look of the British kitchen, followed thirty-six years later to the day.
