On October 5th 1962 Parlophone released Love Me Do, the first Beatles single. It reached number seventeen, a modest showing that nobody outside Liverpool thought much about at the time. The record had been made in a few hours at Abbey Road, and George Martin had needed persuading that the group could usefully write their own material at all.
The same day the first Bond film opened in Britain. Dr No had its premiere at the London Pavilion on October 5th 1962, made for something over a million dollars, with Sean Connery – a Scottish former milkman and coffin polisher – playing a character Ian Fleming had imagined rather more genteelly. Fleming came round to him.
Seven years later, on October 5th 1969, BBC One broadcast the first episode of Monty Python’s Flying Circus just before eleven at night, in a slot the corporation had not troubled to publicise. The programme had no settled title until shortly before transmission and no obvious audience; within two series it had both.
