Britain gets the bomb, and tea comes off the ration
On October 3rd 1952 Britain detonated its first atomic weapon inside the hull of the frigate HMS Plym, moored off the Monte Bello Islands north-west of Australia. The device was placed in a ship rather than on a tower because the fear of the day was a bomb smuggled into a British port. Plym was vaporised, and Britain became the third nuclear power.
The same day brought a smaller and considerably more popular liberation. The papers of October 3rd 1952 carried the news that tea would come off the ration, and the last controls went that Sunday, twelve years after the first. By then the weekly allowance had crept back to three ounces, which was roughly what the country had drunk before the war, so the Ministry of Food expected no rush at the counters. Sugar followed within the year; meat waited until 1954.
East and West Germany formally reunified on October 3rd 1990, eleven months after the Berlin Wall was opened. Forty-five years of division ended at midnight, and the date replaced June 17th as the German national holiday.
The name James Herriot was borrowed from a goalkeeper the author had seen on television, the profession not then permitting its members to advertise themselves. James Alfred Wight practised as a vet in Thirsk and turned the work into the much-loved All Creatures Great and Small books, and had been born in Sunderland on October 3rd 1916.
