How we source these
Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.
October 31st through history
All Hallows' Eve, and turnips before pumpkins
Halloween is All Hallows’ Eve, the night before All Saints’ Day, and it sits on top of the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest and was held to be a night when the boundary between worlds was thin. Lanterns were carved from turnips and swedes in Scotland and Ireland long before anyone here had seen a pumpkin, and required a great deal more effort. Guising, going from door to door in disguise in exchange for food, is recorded in Scotland from the sixteenth century.
Martin Luther is said to have posted ninety-five theses against the sale of indulgences on the church door at Wittenberg on October 31st 1517. That he wrote them is certain; that he nailed them up is a later tradition, and disputed. Either way, the Reformation is conventionally dated from that day.
Harry Houdini died on October 31st 1926, having performed while seriously ill. His widow held a seance every Halloween for ten years, on the strength of a code word the two of them had agreed. After the tenth she put out the candle and said that ten years was long enough to wait for any man.
John Keats, the poet, began life above a livery stable at Moorgate on October 31st 1795. Sir Joseph Swan, the inventor who lit the first house in the world by electric light, was born at Sunderland in 1828.
Born on October 31st: star sign, birthstone and birth flower
John Keats and Sir Joseph Swan โ both named above โ share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.
Star sign
Scorpio — a Water sign ruled by Mars (traditional) / Pluto (modern), symbolised by the Scorpion.
Birthstone
traditionally Opal, or Opal or Tourmaline in the modern list for October.
Birth flower
Marigold (primary), also Cosmos — most commonly cited sources agree on marigold as the main October flower.
None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
