Henry Tudor was crowned Henry VII at Westminster Abbey on October 30th 1485, ten weeks after Bosworth and three months before he married Elizabeth of York and joined the two claims together. His own title rested on a battlefield and a thin descent through an illegitimate line, so he dated his reign from the day before Bosworth, which conveniently made traitors of everyone who had fought against him. He raised the Yeomen of the Guard in the same year, and they have attended every sovereign since.

On the evening of October 30th 1938, New York time, the Mercury Theatre broadcast Orson Welles’s version of The War of the Worlds as a sequence of news bulletins. Some listeners were frightened. The mass panic of legend was largely the work of the following morning’s newspapers, which had commercial reasons of their own for wanting radio thought irresponsible.

The Soviet Union detonated the largest weapon ever tested over Novaya Zemlya on October 30th 1961, with a yield of about fifty megatons. The flash was seen hundreds of miles away. It was far too large to be of any military use, which was more or less the point.
