Henry V’s army met a much larger French force at Agincourt on October 25th 1415, in a ploughed field between two woods after a night of rain. The English were outnumbered, ill and short of food; the French were funnelled into ground too narrow for their numbers and too soft for their horses, and the longbowmen decided the day. Shakespeare gave St Crispin’s Day its afterlife nearly two centuries later, and the phrase ‘we few, we happy few’ is his rather than Henry’s.

At Balaclava on October 25th 1854 a garbled order sent the Light Brigade, some six hundred and seventy horsemen, down a valley towards Russian guns with more guns on the heights on either side. Fewer than two hundred returned fit for duty. A French general watching remarked that it was magnificent, but that it was not war. Tennyson read the account in The Times and had his poem in print within seven weeks.
