Football gets a rulebook, and the clocks go back
On the evening of October 26th 1863 representatives of eleven London clubs met at the Freemasons’ Tavern in Great Queen Street and founded the Football Association. The object was to agree a single set of rules where there had been dozens. It took six meetings, and the clubs that insisted on carrying the ball and kicking opponents’ shins walked out, in due course to codify rugby instead.
The Beatles collected their MBEs from the Queen at Buckingham Palace on October 26th 1965, arriving in Lennon’s Rolls-Royce through a crowd of some four thousand. Several earlier recipients returned their own medals in protest at the honour going to a pop group. Lennon returned his four years later, citing Biafra, Vietnam and the chart position of Cold Turkey, in that order.
British Summer Time ends on the last Sunday in October, a date that falls somewhere between the 25th and the 31st.
