The guns open at El Alamein
At twenty minutes to ten on the evening of October 23rd 1942 the artillery of the Eighth Army opened at El Alamein, 882 guns firing together. Montgomery had refused to attack until he was ready, which had exasperated Churchill for the better part of two months. The battle ran for twelve days and ended with Rommel in retreat. Church bells were rung across Britain in November to mark it, for the first time since 1940.
On October 23rd 1956 students marched in Budapest and the Hungarian uprising began. It lasted twelve days before Soviet tanks returned in force. Some two hundred thousand Hungarians left the country, and a considerable number of Western communists left their parties.
Archbishop James Ussher, working from the genealogies in Genesis, calculated that the world had been created on the evening preceding October 23rd 4004 BC. His chronology was printed in the margins of English Bibles for the better part of two centuries, which is how a seventeenth-century Irish scholar’s arithmetic came to be mistaken for scripture.
