How we source these
Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.
October 18th through history
The BBC is founded by people selling wireless sets
The British Broadcasting Company was registered on October 18th 1922 by a consortium of wireless manufacturers, who had worked out that people would only buy sets if there were something to listen to. Its first broadcast went out from 2LO at Marconi House in the Strand four weeks later, opening with the words ‘This is 2LO, Marconi House, London calling’. It became a public corporation in 1927, and has been complained about from every direction in every decade since.
Moby-Dick reached British readers on October 18th 1851, in three volumes and under the title The Whale. The English edition omitted the epilogue in which Ishmael survives, so British reviewers pointed out, reasonably enough, that the book appeared to be narrated by a man who had drowned. American readers got the epilogue a month later.
On October 18th 1968, in the thin air of Mexico City, Bob Beamon jumped 8.90 metres and beat the world long jump record by more than half a metre. The optical measuring device laid along the pit did not reach that far, and officials had to send for a tape. The record stood for twenty-three years.
Canaletto, the Venetian painter renowned for his views of the city’s canals, spent ten years in England painting the Thames much as he had painted the Grand Canal. He was born in Venice on October 18th 1697, and Chuck Berry, one of the founding figures of rock and roll, in St Louis in 1926.
Born on October 18th: star sign, birthstone and birth flower
Canaletto and Chuck Berry โ both named above โ share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.
Star sign
Libra — an Air sign ruled by Venus, symbolised by the Scales.
Birthstone
traditionally Opal, or Opal or Tourmaline in the modern list for October.
Birth flower
Marigold (primary), also Cosmos — most commonly cited sources agree on marigold as the main October flower.
None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
