How we source these
Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.
October 19th through history
Black Monday, three days after the storm
On Monday October 19th 1987 share prices collapsed around the world, and the FTSE 100 fell by more than a tenth in a day, then by more than a tenth again the following morning. London had been half-shut on the Friday because of the Great Storm, which left many City traders unable to reach their desks and a good many positions unhedged over the weekend. The index recovered its losses within two years, which was no comfort whatever at the time.
Cornwallis surrendered his army at Yorktown on October 19th 1781, effectively ending the fighting in the American War of Independence. He pleaded illness and sent a deputy to hand over his sword. Lord North, given the news in Downing Street, is said to have taken it as he would have taken a ball in the breast.
King John died at Newark in the night of 18 to October 19th 1216, a few days after losing part of his baggage train, and possibly the crown jewels, while crossing the Wash. He had reigned seventeen years, lost Normandy, quarrelled with the Pope and been obliged to seal Magna Carta.
An unusually strong day for British storytelling: John le Carre, the former intelligence officer turned spy novelist, born at Poole in 1931; Michael Gambon, the stage and screen actor who would later play Dumbledore, in Dublin in 1940; and Philip Pullman, author of the His Dark Materials trilogy, in Norwich in 1946.
Born on October 19th: star sign, birthstone and birth flower
John le Carre and Sir Michael Gambon โ both named above โ share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.
Star sign
Libra — an Air sign ruled by Venus, symbolised by the Scales.
Birthstone
traditionally Opal, or Opal or Tourmaline in the modern list for October.
Birth flower
Marigold (primary), also Cosmos — most commonly cited sources agree on marigold as the main October flower.
None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
