How we source these

Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.

July 5th through history

The day the National Health Service began

On July 5th 1948 Aneurin Bevan arrived at Park Hospital in Davyhulme, Trafford, and the National Health Service came into being: hospitals, doctors, dentists and medicines free at the point of use. The National Insurance and National Assistance Acts started the same morning, so the whole welfare state began at once on what the government called the Appointed Day. Bevan had bought off the consultants by allowing private beds, a compromise he summarised as stuffing their mouths with gold.

Three years earlier, on July 5th 1945, Britain had gone to the polls in the election that made it possible. The ballot boxes were then sealed for three weeks so that the votes of servicemen abroad could be gathered in.

The Rolling Stones played a free concert in Hyde Park on July 5th 1969 before a crowd generally put at a quarter of a million. Brian Jones, who had left the band a month before, had died two days earlier; Mick Jagger read a passage from Shelley’s Adonais and thousands of white butterflies were released, a good many of which had not survived the boxes.

The first mammal cloned from an adult cell was a lamb, born at the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh on July 5th 1996 and kept quiet for seven months while the paper went through peer review. The donor cell came from a mammary gland, hence Dolly. July 5th is also the birthday of four very different figures: the showman P. T. Barnum, founder of the circus that bore his name, in 1810; the celebrated stage actress Sarah Siddons in 1755; the American musician Huey Lewis, frontman of Huey Lewis and the News, in 1950; and the television actress Edie Falco in 1963.

Born on July 5th: star sign, birthstone and birth flower

P. T. Barnum and Sarah Siddons โ€” both named above โ€” share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.

Star sign

Cancer — a Water sign ruled by the Moon, symbolised by the Crab.

Birthstone

Ruby for July.

Birth flower

Larkspur (primary), also Water Lily — most commonly cited sources agree on larkspur as the main July flower.

None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ€” zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
