How we source these
Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.
July 14th through history
The Bastille falls, and dynamite goes off in Surrey
A Parisian crowd took the Bastille on July 14th 1789 and found seven prisoners inside: four forgers, two men held as lunatics and one aristocrat detained at his family’s request. The fortress was pulled down by a contractor who made a fortune selling souvenir models carved from its own stone. Louis XVI’s celebrated one-word diary entry for the day, ‘rien’, appears in his hunting log and means that he shot nothing.
On July 14th 1867 Alfred Nobel gave the first public demonstration of dynamite, at a quarry at Merstham in Surrey. He had taken out a British patent two months earlier and the point of the display was safety rather than power: he set light to sticks of it, threw packets off a cliff face and detonated others by various means. The authorities remained unconvinced.
The New Horizons probe made its closest approach to Pluto on July 14th 2015, at about ten to twelve in the morning GMT, after nine and a half years and three billion miles. The radio signal confirming it had survived took four and a half hours to reach Earth.
Emmeline Pankhurst, the suffragette leader, always gave her birthday as July 14th 1858, liking the coincidence with Bastille Day; the Manchester register, filled in four months late, records the 15th. Woody Guthrie, the folk singer, was born in 1912, Ingmar Bergman, the film director, in 1918 and Gerald Ford, who became president of the United States, in 1913.
Born on July 14th: star sign, birthstone and birth flower
Emmeline Pankhurst and Ingmar Bergman โ both named above โ share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.
Star sign
Cancer — a Water sign ruled by the Moon, symbolised by the Crab.
Birthstone
Ruby for July.
Birth flower
Larkspur (primary), also Water Lily — most commonly cited sources agree on larkspur as the main July flower.
None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
