The Battle of Britain opens over the Channel
The Battle of Britain is conventionally dated from July 10th 1940, when large German formations attacked a convoy in the Channel off Dover and Fighter Command was drawn up in strength for the first time. The RAF had rather more than six hundred serviceable fighters and one advantage nobody on the other side properly understood: a chain of radar stations feeding a single control room.
On July 10th 1553, four days after the death of Edward VI, Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed queen in London. She was about sixteen and had been told of her elevation the previous day. Support for Mary Tudor gathered so quickly in East Anglia that by the 19th the same Privy Council had proclaimed Mary instead.
Telstar 1 was launched from Cape Canaveral at 8.35 in the morning GMT on July 10th 1962: the first privately financed satellite and the first capable of relaying live television. Joe Meek wrote an instrumental in its honour, and ‘Telstar’ by the Tornados became the first record by a British group to reach number one in America.
