How we source these

Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.

January 6th through history

Twelfth Night, a hurried coronation and the first telegram

Sixth of January is Epiphany, the twelfth day of Christmas, and in England the traditional deadline for taking down the decorations. It was for centuries the noisier end of the festive season — Twelfth Night cake, a bean baked inside to choose the Lord of Misrule, and a licence to misbehave that the Victorians eventually disapproved out of existence.

It is also one of the busiest days in the English royal calendar. On January 6th 1066, the day after Edward the Confessor died, he was buried in the new Westminster Abbey and Harold Godwinson was crowned king in the same building on the same day — an indecent haste that his enemies made much of, and which William of Normandy cited as evidence of usurpation.

On January 6th 1838 Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail first got their electric telegraph to work, at the Speedwell Ironworks in New Jersey, sending a message down two miles of wire in front of a small company that included Alfred’s father, the ironmaster who was paying for it. The larger public demonstration followed five days later. Within a generation the technology had wired Britain to India.

Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts observe January 6th as the detective’s birthday, an inference drawn from two Twelfth Night references in the canon and defended with the seriousness the subject deserves.

Born on January 6th: star sign, birthstone and birth flower

Rowan Atkinson and Joan of Arc — both named above — share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.

Star sign

Capricorn — an Earth sign ruled by Saturn, symbolised by the Sea-Goat.

Birthstone

Garnet for January.

Birth flower

Carnation (primary), also Snowdrop — most commonly cited sources agree on carnation as the main January flower.

None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is — zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
