How we source these
Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.
January 7th through history
Jupiter gets moons, and the Channel gets crossed by air
On January 7th 1610 Galileo Galilei turned his improved telescope on Jupiter and saw three small stars beside it. Over the following nights they moved — and moved with the planet. He had found the Galilean moons, and with them the first clear evidence that not everything in the heavens circled the Earth. The Church’s disagreement with him began, in effect, that week.
On January 7th 1785 the Frenchman Jean-Pierre Blanchard and the American doctor John Jeffries crossed the English Channel from Dover to the Forest of Guines by hydrogen balloon — the first aerial crossing of the Channel and the first international flight of any kind. They shed ballast, then instruments, then most of their clothing to stay airborne.
Long-distance talk followed the same trajectory. On January 7th 1927 the first commercial transatlantic telephone service opened between London and New York, by radio link, at a cost of roughly fifteen pounds for three minutes — several weeks’ wages for most callers.
In 2015 the date acquired a darker weight, with the attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris.
Born on January 7th: star sign, birthstone and birth flower
Lewis Hamilton and Gerald Durrell — both named above — share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.
Star sign
Capricorn — an Earth sign ruled by Saturn, symbolised by the Sea-Goat.
Birthstone
Garnet for January.
Birth flower
Carnation (primary), also Snowdrop — most commonly cited sources agree on carnation as the main January flower.
None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is — zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
