How we source these

Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.

January 5th through history

The death that made 1066 inevitable

On January 5th 1066 Edward the Confessor died at Westminster, childless, having spent his last strength on the new abbey church consecrated only days before. His death set loose the most consequential succession crisis in English history: within a year Harold Godwinson had been crowned and killed, Harald Hardrada had invaded and died at Stamford Bridge, and William of Normandy had won at Hastings. Every English monarch since traces back to that vacancy.

Nine centuries later, on January 5th 1968, Alexander Dubcek became First Secretary of the Czechoslovak Communist Party and began the reforms that became the Prague Spring. It lasted until August, when Warsaw Pact tanks arrived to end it.

For most British households January 5th carries a more domestic weight: it is, by long custom, the day the Christmas decorations come down. The Church of England places Twelfth Night on the fifth, counting the twelve days from Christmas Day itself; other traditions count from Boxing Day and hold out until the sixth. Superstition is unhelpfully vague on which of the two brings bad luck, so most people take the earlier deadline and have done with it.

It is also the date, in 1477, of the Battle of Nancy, at which Charles the Bold of Burgundy was killed and the Burgundian state effectively dissolved.

Born on January 5th: star sign, birthstone and birth flower

Diane Keaton and Robert Duvall — both named above — share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.

Star sign

Capricorn — an Earth sign ruled by Saturn, symbolised by the Sea-Goat.

Birthstone

Garnet for January.

Birth flower

Carnation (primary), also Snowdrop — most commonly cited sources agree on carnation as the main January flower.

None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is — zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
