On September 9th 1513 a Scottish army under James IV met the Earl of Surrey’s force on wet ground below Branxton, near Flodden. The Scots came down the slope with long continental pikes that proved unmanageable in mud against the English bill, and by evening the king, nine earls and a great part of the Scottish nobility were dead. James IV remains the last British monarch to be killed in battle. The lament Flowers of the Forest is still played at Scottish remembrance services and, by custom, at little else.
