At a quarter past eleven on the morning of Sunday September 3rd 1939, Neville Chamberlain broadcast to the nation from the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street. No reply had come from Berlin to the British ultimatum. ‘I have to tell you now,’ he said, ‘that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this country is at war with Germany.’ He added that it was a bitter blow to him that his long struggle for peace had failed. Air-raid sirens sounded over London within the half hour. It was a false alarm.
The date belonged to Oliver Cromwell before that. He beat the Scots at Dunbar on September 3rd 1650, destroyed the royalist army at Worcester on September 3rd 1651 in what he called his crowning mercy, and died on September 3rd 1658 while a great storm blew across southern England.
