A contaminated dish in a Paddington laboratory
Alexander Fleming came back from holiday to his laboratory at St Mary’s, Paddington — on September 28th 1928 by the popular account, at the start of that month by the scholarly one — and found that a stack of culture plates he had left out had been colonised by a mould, and that around the mould the bacteria had died. ‘One sometimes finds what one is not looking for,’ he said later, which is as close as he ever came to boasting. His paper attracted almost no attention, and it took Florey and Chain at Oxford a decade to turn the observation into a drug. The three shared the Nobel Prize in 1945.
