Cleopatra’s Needle was raised on the Victoria Embankment on September 12th 1878. The obelisk was about 3,500 years old and had nothing to do with Cleopatra; it had been brought from Alexandria inside a purpose-built iron cylinder that broke loose in a storm in the Bay of Biscay, at the cost of six lives, and was recovered days later drifting off the Spanish coast. Sealed into the pedestal is a Victorian time capsule containing cigars, hairpins, a baby’s bottle, a shilling razor, a Bradshaw’s railway guide and twelve photographs of the best-looking Englishwomen of the day.

On September 12th 1940 four teenagers and a dog found their way into a cave near Montignac in the Dordogne and became the first people in roughly seventeen thousand years to see the paintings at Lascaux. The cave was opened to the public and closed again in 1963, because the breath of visitors was destroying what it had come to see.
