The far side of the Moon, photographed at last
On October 7th 1959 the Soviet probe Luna 3 passed behind the Moon and took twenty-nine photographs of the side no human being had ever seen. The film was developed on board, scanned and radioed home; the results were grainy and mostly unusable. They were also the only pictures in existence, which meant the Soviet Academy of Sciences got to name what it found. The far side of the Moon carries Russian names to this day.
At Lepanto on October 7th 1571 a Christian fleet under Don John of Austria broke the Ottoman navy in the last great battle fought under oars. Among the wounded was a young Spanish soldier called Miguel de Cervantes, who lost the use of his left hand and always maintained that it had been worth it.
