Britain launches a satellite it has already cancelled
On October 28th 1971 a Black Arrow rocket lifted off from Woomera in South Australia and put the 66-kilogram satellite Prospero into orbit. Britain became the sixth nation to launch its own satellite on its own rocket, after the Soviet Union, the United States, France, Japan and China. The programme had been cancelled three months earlier on grounds of cost, so the launch was simultaneously a first and a last. Prospero is still up there, and is expected to stay in orbit for about a century.
The Cuban missile crisis ended on October 28th 1962, when Moscow announced by radio that the missiles would be withdrawn. The Americans quietly agreed to remove their own missiles from Turkey, a detail that was kept out of the public account for years.
The Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York harbour on October 28th 1886, in fog and rain, a gift from France that had crossed the Atlantic in some 350 pieces packed in crates. The poem about huddled masses was not fixed to the pedestal until 1903.
