A car goes faster than sound
On October 15th 1997 Andy Green, a serving RAF fighter pilot, drove Thrust SSC through the measured mile on the Black Rock Desert in Nevada twice within an hour and averaged 763 miles an hour, or Mach 1.016. It was the first time a car had travelled faster than sound, and it happened fifty years and one day after Chuck Yeager first did it in an aeroplane. The car weighed ten and a half tonnes and was pushed along by two Rolls-Royce engines out of a Phantom. The record still stands.
Napoleon arrived off St Helena aboard HMS Northumberland on October 15th 1815, four months after Waterloo. The island lies more than a thousand miles from the nearest continent, which was precisely why the British government had chosen it. He was landed two days later and never left.
