Brighton, 1984, and a landfall in 1492
A bomb exploded at the Grand Hotel in Brighton at just before three in the morning on October 12th 1984, during the Conservative Party conference. Five people were killed and thirty-four injured. The IRA statement afterwards said that the government would have to be lucky always, and that they had to be lucky only once. Margaret Thatcher, who had been awake working on her speech and was unhurt, opened the conference at half past nine that morning as scheduled.
Columbus made landfall in the Bahamas on October 12th 1492 by the Julian calendar then in use, after thirty-six days out of the Canaries. He remained convinced until his death that he had reached the outskirts of Asia. Which island he actually stepped onto has never been settled.
Edith Cavell, an English nurse who had helped some two hundred Allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium, was executed in Brussels on October 12th 1915. Her body was brought home after the war and she was buried at Norwich Cathedral.
