The suffragettes founded in a Manchester parlour
On October 10th 1903 Emmeline Pankhurst called a meeting of women at her house at 62 Nelson Street, Manchester, and founded the Women’s Social and Political Union. Its motto was Deeds Not Words. The Daily Mail coined the word suffragette three years later as a diminutive and an insult; the union adopted it immediately and put it on the masthead of its newspaper.
The same date in 1957 brought the worst nuclear accident in British history. A fire broke out in the core of Pile One at Windscale in Cumberland on October 10th and burned for three days. Milk from farms over some five hundred square kilometres was poured away for weeks afterwards. The site was subsequently renamed Sellafield.
Henry Cavendish, born on October 10th 1731, established the composition of water and weighed the Earth in a shed at Clapham using lead balls and a torsion beam. He was so retiring that he communicated with his housekeeper by note, and a great deal of his best work was found unpublished after his death.
