On November 3rd 1534 the Reformation Parliament met for the session that passed the Act of Supremacy, declaring Henry VIII the only supreme head on earth of the Church of England. Royal assent followed in December. The break with Rome had been building for three years through a series of statutes, but this was the sentence that mattered, and refusing to swear to it became treason. Thomas More had already resigned the chancellorship rather than be asked.

Sputnik 2 was launched on November 3rd 1957 carrying Laika, a stray found on the streets of Moscow, the first living creature to orbit the Earth. The capsule had no means of return and she did not survive the flight. The Soviet account of her end was corrected only decades later, by one of the scientists involved, who said the mission had taught them little that justified it.

Columbus sighted an island in the Caribbean on November 3rd 1493, on his second voyage, and named it Dominica because he saw it on a Sunday. It is one of the few names he gave that has stayed put.
