On May 5th 1980, the sixth day of the siege of the Iranian Embassy at Prince’s Gate in Knightsbridge, the SAS went in through the windows at twenty-three minutes past seven in the evening and had it under control in about seventeen minutes. The BBC and ITV were broadcasting live; a snooker final was interrupted for it. A regiment the government barely acknowledged was famous by the ten o’clock news. Nineteen hostages came out alive; two did not survive the siege.

Napoleon Bonaparte died on May 5th 1821 on St Helena, a British island in the South Atlantic a thousand miles from anywhere, where he had spent five and a half years with a household, a billiard table and a garden. He was fifty-one. His body was returned to France in 1840.
