The Victoria line was officially opened on March 7th 1969. The Queen unveiled a plaque at Victoria, then bought a fivepenny ticket from a machine and travelled one stop to Green Park, becoming the first reigning monarch to ride the Underground. The line was the first new route under central London since Edwardian times and the first anywhere to run under automatic train operation, the driver there chiefly to open the doors.

Alexander Graham Bell was granted United States patent 174,465 on March 7th 1876, under the unglamorous title Improvement in Telegraphy. A rival, Elisha Gray, had lodged a caveat at the same office on the same February day that Bell’s application arrived, and the question of who reached the counter first occupied lawyers for the rest of the century.

The first two-way telephone conversation across the Atlantic followed on March 7th 1926, by short-wave radio between the Post Office in London and Bell Laboratories in New York, fifty years to the day after Bell’s patent. The sound was poor and the link experimental; a paying service opened the following January at fifteen pounds for three minutes.

Piet Mondrian, born on March 7th 1872 and later known for his abstract grids of black lines and primary colours, spent his last twenty years painting almost nothing else, and broke with a fellow painter over the introduction of a diagonal. The comedian and actor Rik Mayall was born in 1958 and the cricketer Viv Richards, in Antigua, in 1952.
