The Reshaping of British Railways was published on March 27th 1963. It proposed closing 2,363 stations and around 5,000 route miles — more than half the stations and roughly a third of the network — on the grounds that a third of the system carried one per cent of the traffic. Richard Beeching had been brought in from ICI on a salary larger than the prime minister’s, which the newspapers reported at every opportunity. Rural England has not stopped arguing about it.
