The Slave Trade Act received royal assent on March 25th 1807, making it illegal for British ships to carry enslaved people. It freed nobody: slavery itself remained lawful in the British colonies until the Act of 1833, and apprenticeship kept many in place for years after that. William Wilberforce had brought a bill before the Commons in most years since 1791 and lost every time. The Royal Navy then spent six decades stopping slave ships off West Africa.

March 25th is Lady Day, and until 1752 it was the first day of the legal year in England — hence the double-dated documents of the period. When the calendar changed, the Treasury declined to lose eleven days of revenue and shifted the year end to April 4th; a skipped leap day in 1800 made it the 5th, which is why the tax year still begins on April 6th, a date otherwise entirely without merit.

The Treaty of Rome was signed on March 25th 1957 by six countries. Britain sent an official to the preparatory talks and then withdrew him, applied to join four years later, was vetoed twice by de Gaulle, and got in sixteen years after the signature.
