D-Day was meant to be June 5th 1944. Group Captain James Stagg, a Scottish meteorologist, found a gap in an appalling Channel storm and Eisenhower postponed by twenty-four hours on his advice. On the morning of the sixth some 7,000 vessels crossed, roughly 156,000 men landed by sea and air, and the Germans, who had read the same weather, were not expecting anybody.

The British and Canadian beaches were Gold, Juno and Sword. Three Horsa gliders had come down beside the Caen canal bridge shortly after midnight — three more took the Orne river bridge close by — near enough for Major John Howard’s men to take it in about ten minutes; it has been called Pegasus Bridge ever since. Caen itself was a first-day objective and held out for another five weeks.

Eisenhower had written a note to be issued if the landings failed. The troops, the air and the navy had done all that bravery could do, it said, and any blame attached to him alone. He folded it into his wallet, forgot about it, and dated it July 5th by mistake. It was never needed.

On June 6th 1844 George Williams, a draper’s assistant, founded the Young Men’s Christian Association at a meeting above the shop where he worked in St Paul’s Churchyard; it now operates in over a hundred countries. Robert Falcon Scott, the polar explorer who led the ill-fated race to the South Pole, was born on June 6th 1868 at Devonport. The date also belongs to the tennis champion Björn Borg, the novelist and Nobel laureate Thomas Mann, and the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.
