Gavrilo Princip shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo on June 28th 1914. An earlier attempt that morning had failed; the motorcade then took a wrong turning into Franz Josef Street, stopped to reverse, and stopped in front of him. He was nineteen, and too young under Habsburg law to hang. The story that he was buying a sandwich is a later invention.

The Treaty of Versailles was signed in the Hall of Mirrors on June 28th 1919, the fifth anniversary of the shots in Sarajevo. The German delegates were brought in last, after everyone else was seated, and signed first. John Maynard Keynes, who had resigned from the British delegation in disgust, published his account of the negotiations before the year was out and sold it by the tens of thousands.
