Henry VIII married Catherine of Aragon on June 11th 1509, quietly, at the friary church at Greenwich. He was seventeen and had been king for seven weeks; she was his brother’s widow, which had required a papal dispensation. Twenty-four years later he decided the dispensation had been invalid all along, and the English Reformation followed from that argument.

At Le Mans on June 11th 1955 a Mercedes clipped another car at close to a hundred and fifty miles an hour, left the track and went into the crowd opposite the pits. Eighty-three spectators died, along with the driver Pierre Levegh. The race was not stopped, on the grounds that a hundred thousand people leaving at once would have blocked the roads for the ambulances. It remains the worst accident in the history of motor racing, and Switzerland banned circuit racing for the next sixty-seven years.
