How we source these

Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.

January 31st through history

Britain leaves the European Union

At eleven o’clock on the evening of January 31st 2020 โ€” midnight in Brussels โ€” the United Kingdom ceased to be a member state of the European Union, forty-seven years after joining the EEC. There was a light show in Downing Street, a party in Parliament Square and a candlelit vigil in Edinburgh. The transition period then ran on to December, so for eleven months almost nothing changed.

The same date carries the worst natural disaster to strike twentieth-century Britain. On the night of Saturday January 31st 1953 a North Sea storm surge met a spring tide and broke the east-coast sea walls in some 1,200 places. Three hundred and seven people died in England, fifty-eight of them on Canvey Island, and nineteen in Scotland. Earlier that day the Stranraer to Larne ferry Princess Victoria had foundered in the North Channel with more than 130 lives lost. The Thames Barrier exists because of that night.

Guy Fawkes was executed at Westminster on January 31st 1606, three months after being found in a cellar beneath the House of Lords with thirty-six barrels of powder and a slow match.

Seat belts became compulsory for drivers and front-seat passengers on January 31st 1983, after more than a decade of parliamentary argument about whether how a motorist sat was any business of the state’s. Compliance reached about ninety per cent within a fortnight.

Born on January 31st: star sign, birthstone and birth flower

John Lydon and Franz Schubert โ€” both named above โ€” share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.

Star sign

Aquarius — an Air sign ruled by Saturn (traditional) / Uranus (modern), symbolised by the Water-Bearer.

Birthstone

Garnet for January.

Birth flower

Carnation (primary), also Snowdrop — most commonly cited sources agree on carnation as the main January flower.

None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ€” zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
