Queen Victoria died at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight on January 22nd 1901, aged eighty-one, having reigned for sixty-three years and seven months. Most of her subjects had never known another monarch. The country had no settled idea of how to mourn on that scale, and the funeral arrangements — she had left detailed instructions, including a plaster cast of Albert’s hand in the coffin — were improvised on an imperial scale.

Few days in British military history are stranger than January 22nd 1879. A Zulu army overwhelmed a British column at Isandlwana, killing around 1,300 of it, some 780 of them British regulars and the rest colonial and African troops. Later the same day a garrison of about 150 held Rorke’s Drift against repeated attack. Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded for that defence, seven of them to a single regiment.

In 1970 the date brought the jet age’s largest step: Pan Am’s first commercial Boeing 747 service to London Heathrow, scheduled for the twenty-first, delayed by an overheating engine, and eventually flown out of New York at ten to two in the morning on the twenty-second in a substitute aircraft. The widebody era began anyway.

Told that Trinity forbade dogs, the poet Byron installed a tame bear in his rooms and asked whether it might sit for a fellowship. He was born on January 22nd 1788, 227 years after Francis Bacon, the philosopher and statesman remembered as a father of the scientific method.
