How we source these
Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.
January 19th through history
Bombs over Norfolk โ Britain's first air raid
On the night of January 19th 1915 two German Zeppelins crossed the North Sea and dropped bombs on Great Yarmouth, Sheringham and King’s Lynn. Four people were killed, the first of them a shoemaker of fifty-three and a widow of seventy-two, both in the streets of Great Yarmouth. It was the first airship raid on Britain and the first air attack to kill British civilians, and it ended in a single night the assumption that the Channel and the Royal Navy made the country unreachable. Airship raids continued for most of the war and killed some five hundred people.
Birthdays of consequence cluster here. James Watt was born on January 19th 1736 in Greenock; his separate condenser turned the steam engine from a pump into a prime mover and made the Industrial Revolution mechanically possible. Edgar Allan Poe, the master of the gothic tale and poems such as The Raven, followed in 1809, Paul Cezanne in 1839, the blues-rock singer Janis Joplin in 1943, and the country music icon Dolly Parton in 1946.
In 1966 Indira Gandhi was elected leader of the Congress Party and became India’s first โ and so far only โ woman prime minister.
And on January 19th 1983 Klaus Barbie, the Gestapo chief of Lyon, was arrested in Bolivia after nearly four decades at liberty.
Born on January 19th: star sign, birthstone and birth flower
Dolly Parton and Janis Joplin โ both named above โ share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.
Star sign
Capricorn — an Earth sign ruled by Saturn, symbolised by the Sea-Goat. If you were born right on the cusp, sources vary by a day either way on exactly where one sign ends and the next begins.
Birthstone
Garnet for January.
Birth flower
Carnation (primary), also Snowdrop — most commonly cited sources agree on carnation as the main January flower.
None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
