How we source these
Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.
January 15th through history
A coronation, a museum and an encyclopaedia
On January 15th 1559 Elizabeth Tudor was crowned at Westminster Abbey, aged twenty-five, having chosen the date on the advice of her astrologer John Dee. She rode through London the day before in a procession of pageants staged by the city at its own expense, and she stopped at each one to make sure she was seen listening. The reign that followed ran forty-four years.
Two centuries later, on January 15th 1759, the British Museum opened to the public at Montagu House in Bloomsbury โ the first national public museum in the world, free to ‘all studious and curious persons’. In practice, admission required a written application and a ticket, and only ten people were admitted per hour. The principle, however, stood.
The modern equivalent arrived on January 15th 2001, when Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger launched Wikipedia as a side project intended to feed articles into a more respectable peer-reviewed encyclopaedia. The side project ate the parent within a year.
Martin Luther King Jr, the civil rights leader, was born in Atlanta on January 15th 1929 and christened Michael; his father changed both their names some years later, after a visit to Germany and the Luther sites.
Born on January 15th: star sign, birthstone and birth flower
Martin Luther King Jr and Ivor Novello โ both named above โ share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.
Star sign
Capricorn — an Earth sign ruled by Saturn, symbolised by the Sea-Goat.
Birthstone
Garnet for January.
Birth flower
Carnation (primary), also Snowdrop — most commonly cited sources agree on carnation as the main January flower.
None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
