How many days and weeks until February 3rd?

On February 3rd 1959 a light aircraft carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J. P. Richardson came down in a field shortly after taking off from Mason City, Iowa, on a winter tour. All three, and the 21-year-old pilot Roger Peterson, were killed. Holly was 22 and had recorded everything he is remembered for in about eighteen months. Don McLean gave the date its name in American Pie in 1971.

The Soviet probe Luna 9 made the first controlled landing on the Moon on February 3rd 1966, in the Ocean of Storms, and began transmitting pictures. Astronomers at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire, listening in, noticed the signal used the same Radiofax standard as newspaper picture wires. The Daily Express sent a receiver up the motorway, and the first photographs from the surface of another world were published in Britain two mornings later, before Moscow had released its own.

Felix Mendelssohn, the composer, was born on February 3rd 1809 in Hamburg. A tour of Scotland at twenty gave him the opening bars of the Hebrides overture, jotted down at Tobermory the day before a wet crossing to Staffa, and eventually the Scottish Symphony.

Two Americans of very different temperaments share the date: Gertrude Stein, the writer, born in 1874, who kept the most consequential salon in Paris, and Norman Rockwell, the illustrator, born twenty years after her, who painted Saturday Evening Post covers for nearly half a century.
