How we source these
Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.
August 4th through history
Britain goes to war at eleven o'clock
Britain’s ultimatum to Germany, demanding the withdrawal of German troops from Belgium, expired at eleven o’clock on the evening of August 4th 1914, midnight in Berlin. No reply came. Asquith’s cabinet had been divided for days; by the following morning the country was at war with an empire it had spent a generation trying not to fight. Crowds stood outside Buckingham Palace into the small hours.
On August 4th 1265 Simon de Montfort was defeated and killed at Evesham by a royal army under the future Edward I, who had escaped captivity that spring. A contemporary chronicler called it ‘the murder of Evesham, for battle it was none’. The parliament de Montfort had summoned that January, with burgesses from the boroughs as well as knights and barons, outlived him as a precedent.
On August 4th 1944 the Frank family were arrested in the annexe behind an Amsterdam warehouse after two years in hiding. Of the eight people taken that day, only Otto Frank survived the war.
The Queen Mother, queen consort to George VI and mother of Elizabeth II, had most of the twentieth century to herself: born on August 4th 1900, she died in March 2002 at 101. Percy Bysshe Shelley, the Romantic poet remembered above all for Ozymandias, shares the day, born in 1792, with Louis Armstrong, the jazz trumpeter and singer, in 1901 and Barack Obama, the 44th American president, in 1961.
Born on August 4th: star sign, birthstone and birth flower
Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and Barack Obama โ both named above โ share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.
Star sign
Leo — a Fire sign ruled by the Sun, symbolised by the Lion.
Birthstone
traditionally Sardonyx, or Peridot or Spinel in the modern list for August.
Birth flower
Gladiolus (primary), also Poppy — most commonly cited sources agree on gladiolus as the main August flower.
None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
