The news from Paris, in the small hours
Diana, Princess of Wales, died in the early hours of Sunday August 31st 1997 in a Paris hospital, after a car crash in the underpass beneath the Pont de l’Alma. She was 36. Dodi Fayed and the driver of the car were also killed. The news came through to British newsrooms during the night, and the country woke to it: church bells, altered schedules, and by mid-morning a statement from the prime minister at his constituency in Trimdon.
What followed had no precedent. Flowers were piled several feet deep outside Kensington Palace, people queued for hours to sign books of condolence, and the funeral on September 6th was watched by an audience estimated in the billions. By convention no flag but the Royal Standard ever flew over Buckingham Palace, and never at half mast; after a week of public argument the Union flag was hoisted there at half mast.
On August 31st 1957 Malaya became independent, and the Union flag came down at midnight on the padang in Kuala Lumpur before a crowd that shouted merdeka seven times. Independence came in the middle of a communist insurgency that had run for nine years and would run for three more, and the new government asked British troops to stay on and finish it.
