How we source these
Public holidays are taken from official government sources for each country and cover national holidays only. The United States, Canada and Australia all have significant state and provincial holidays that are not shown, and India’s system of state, optional and restricted holidays means only three days are observed nationwide. Where a government has not yet published a year, we say so rather than guess. Always check the official source for the country concerned rather than relying on this alone.
August 29th through history
A ring of iron, and the current begins
On August 29th 1831 Michael Faraday, in the basement of the Royal Institution in Albemarle Street, wound two separate coils of wire around opposite sides of an iron ring and connected one to a battery and the other to a galvanometer. The needle flicked when he made the connection and flicked back when he broke it, and nothing happened in between. That flick was electromagnetic induction, and within two months he had built the first dynamo.
The Soviet Union tested its first atomic bomb at Semipalatinsk on August 29th 1949, some four years earlier than Western intelligence had thought possible. American aircraft detected the fallout a few days later, and the news reached the public in September.
The Beatles played Candlestick Park in San Francisco on the evening of August 29th 1966, local time, the last advertised concert they ever gave. They knew it was likely to be the last and took a camera on stage to photograph each other and the crowd, which no band expecting to come back would have bothered to do.
Michael Jackson, the singer who became known as the King of Pop, and the comedian and actor Lenny Henry were both born on August 29th 1958. Ingrid Bergman, the actress best remembered for Casablanca, had the date in 1915, and Richard Attenborough, the actor and director behind Gandhi, in 1923.
Born on August 29th: star sign, birthstone and birth flower
Michael Jackson and Lenny Henry โ both named above โ share this star sign with everyone else born in the same window.
Star sign
Virgo — an Earth sign ruled by Mercury, symbolised by the Maiden.
Birthstone
traditionally Sardonyx, or Peridot or Spinel in the modern list for August.
Birth flower
Gladiolus (primary), also Poppy — most commonly cited sources agree on gladiolus as the main August flower.
None of this is settled fact in the way the history above is โ zodiac dates, birthstones and birth flowers are conventions rather than laws, and different sources hedge them slightly differently. The birthstone is the most standardised of the three (set by the trade in 1912 and revised since); the birth flower is the least, resting on Victorian tradition rather than any governing body.
