At fourteen minutes past three on the afternoon of August 10th 1675 John Flamsteed, the first Astronomer Royal, laid the foundation stone of the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. Christopher Wren, an astronomer before he was an architect, designed it, and it was built on the footings of a ruined castle out of second-hand brick and timber to keep the cost down. Two centuries later the line drawn through it became the world’s prime meridian.

On August 10th 2003 a weather station at Brogdale near Faversham in Kent recorded 38.5C, the first time Britain had gone past 100F. Gravesend reached 38.1C the same afternoon and was briefly assumed to be the winner; Brogdale’s figure only emerged when the readings were collected a week later. The record has since fallen twice.

The warship Vasa, the pride of the Swedish navy, sailed about 1,300 metres into Stockholm harbour on August 10th 1628, heeled over in a gust and sank. She was raised in 1961, largely intact, and is now the best-preserved seventeenth-century ship in the world.

Jethro Tull took its name from an eighteenth-century agriculturalist because the band’s booking agent kept renaming them until one week’s name stuck. Ian Anderson, the band’s frontman, who plays the flute standing on one leg, was born in Dunfermline on August 10th 1947, and Antonio Banderas, the actor, in 1960.
