Dick Turpin was hanged at the Knavesmire outside York on April 7th 1739, not for highway robbery but for horse theft, and he was caught because of a letter. Living in Yorkshire under the name John Palmer, he wrote to his brother-in-law, who refused to pay the postage; the letter went back to the post office in Essex, where his old schoolmaster recognised the handwriting. Turpin bought new clothes for the occasion and paid five mourners to follow the cart. He is said to have thrown himself off the ladder rather than wait.
