Baird puts a face on a screen in Soho
On October 2nd 1925 John Logie Baird, working in a rented attic in Frith Street, Soho, transmitted the first television image with proper tonal gradation rather than a flat silhouette. The subject was a ventriloquist’s dummy he called Stooky Bill. Wanting a living face, Baird went down a flight of stairs and fetched an office boy named William Taynton, who sat under lamps hot enough to make him flinch. Taynton was paid half a crown, the first fee in the history of television.
HMS Beagle came home on October 2nd 1836, anchoring at Falmouth after four years and nine months at sea. Charles Darwin, who had been twenty-two when he sailed, took the mail coach through the night to Shrewsbury and let himself into his father’s house at breakfast. He never left Britain again.
