The East German politburo had agreed new travel rules on November 9th 1989 that were meant to take effect the following day with orderly applications. Gunter Schabowski, who had not been at the meeting, read the note out at an evening press conference and was asked when it applied. He looked at the paper, hesitated, and said immediately, without delay. Crowds gathered at the crossings, and shortly before midnight the officer commanding at Bornholmer Strasse raised the barrier on his own authority rather than order his men to hold it.

Germany had a republic on November 9th 1918. It was proclaimed from a window of the Reichstag while the Kaiser’s abdication was announced in Berlin without his agreement; he crossed into the Netherlands the next morning. The Armistice was signed two days later.

Dylan Thomas died in New York on November 9th 1953, aged thirty-nine, a few weeks after finishing Under Milk Wood. The BBC broadcast it for the first time the following January, with Richard Burton as First Voice.

Fifty-nine years is a long apprenticeship, and the longest any heir to the British throne served until the present century: Edward VII, eldest son of Queen Victoria, born on November 9th 1841, came to the throne in 1901. The date is also shared by Hedy Lamarr, the Austrian-American actress and co-inventor of an early frequency-hopping technique, born in 1914, and by Carl Sagan, the astronomer and broadcaster who brought the cosmos into British sitting rooms, in 1934.
